Open Science is a collaborative, transparent and accessible approach to research, which implies a structural change in the way of conceiving it, executing it and disseminating its results. It is characterized by the openness not only of publications but also of research data, methodologies, processes, as well as the involvement of citizens in an environment of responsible research and innovation. In other words, it is about making the results of research financed with public funds accessible in digital format for the scientific community that produces them, as well as for the society in general that finances them, promoting the reproducibility of science and the reuse of the results.
According to UNESCO, open science has established itself as “a new paradigm that integrates, in the scientific enterprise, practices of reproducibility, transparency, exchange and collaboration resulting from the greater openness of content, tools and scientific processes”.
In 2018, Crue Universidades Españolas established the Open Science Commission, chaired by a rector, representatives of the General Secretariat of Crue, Crue-Tic and the REBIUN Library Network. This position is currently held by Jaume Puy, rector of the University of Lleida.
Its first aim was to draft the document “Commitment of Universities to Open Science”, approved by the General Assembly of Crue in its session on February 19, 2019, and since then the Commission has been meeting periodically to analyze and debate the different European and national proposals. Some of its members actively participate in different specialized working groups of different institutions and/or initiatives (USA, FECYT, EOSC) related to Open Science.
