On the 27th October 2023, Crue Spanish Universities participated in the kickoff event of the working group on reforming Academic Career Assessment (ACA), led by the European University Association (EUA) and the Young Academy of Europe (YAE). Crue participates in this initiative as part of the work that this association is carrying out in the framework of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) and will be represented by Senena Corbalán, Vice Rector for Research of the University of Murcia and member of Crue’s Sectorial Commission for Research and Innovation. The work will be co-chaired by Pastora Martínez Samper (from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, representing EUA) and Moniek Tromp (from the University of Groningen, representing YAE).
The working group, based on CoARA principles and objectives, will broaden the reflection on research assessment to ACA, supporting models that take into account the full range of work conducted by academics in research, teaching and learning, innovation, management/leadership and service to society.
This group brings together 35 partners, including universities and their associations, research centres and their associations, as well as learned societies of researchers at different stages of their career and one national authority. This critical mass of academic stakeholders will work together to define the objectives and principles of reforming ACA, identifying requirements, potential benefits, and challenges from the perspectives of institutions and academic staff being assessed.
During the kick-off meeting, participants refined the initial steps of the 2-year work-plan approved by CoARA’s Secretariat in July 2023. The aim is to develop an adaptable toolbox for ACA that takes into account all university missions and the broad scope of activities, skills and competences of academic staff at different stages of their career.
